Showcase of outstanding HSC student designers

Minister for Education and Training, John Della Bosca, has today (3 December) launched an exhibition of outstanding designs by HSC students at the Powerhouse Museum.

Mr Della Bosca said designs by 26 HSC Design and Technology students had been selected for the prestigious 2007 DesignTECH exhibition presented by the NSW Board of Studies and the Department of Education and Training.

“A standout feature of all the students’ designs is their desire to make life better for others and they have sought to achieve this in a myriad of creative and innovative ways,” the Minister said.

“Environmental concerns have been central to many of the designs, which use recycled materials, keep waste to a minimum, incorporate environmentally friendly features, highlight conservation issues and even address environmental matters.

“Some of the designers tackle youth issues such as depression, obesity and road safety with creative campaigns, websites and publications.

“There are also some highly functional inventions and aesthetically beautiful pieces, and all the designs are of exceptional quality,” the Minister said.

The designs on show include:

  • a motorbike trailer with automated on/off ramp, which incorporates solar panels,
  • a model of a sustainable school,
  • a fold-up boat,
  • a belt for medical and orientation equipment for bushwalking,
  • a collapsible unicycle,
  • an anti-depression poster campaign,
  • a road safety website, and
  • an elaborate clock made from Australian timbers, including the cogs and wheels.

“This year, 3945 students studied HSC Design and Technology,” the Minister said.

“The course gives students the opportunity to develop design projects in areas of individual interest as well as gain an appreciation of the historical and cultural influences on design and the relationship between design, technology, society and the environment.

“Students also study issues related to design, production and manufacturing, such as environmental and social impacts.

“Many Design and Technology students are interested in careers in architecture, engineering, textile design and other forms of enterprise and innovation – our world class HSC helps students realise their full potential in these areas,” Mr Della Bosca said.

As part of the launch all the students will receive DesignTECH certificates and four special awards will be presented.

The exhibition will be on show until 2 March 2008.
