HSC one-stop online study shop hits top 40
HSC students, teachers and librarians have viewed more than 185,000 pages of information via the Board of Studies new Students Online website - less than one month after it was launched.
Two students have been awarded $50 University Co-op Bookshop vouchers as part of an incentive to attract students to studentsonline.bos.nsw.edu.au.
Ashlee Walker, of Beverly Hills Girls High School, received her voucher as the 1000th student to log in using her student ID and PIN numbers and Emily Rahme, of Bethlehem College, Ashfield, was selected for a voucher by a random number generator from the first 5000 to log in.
Dr John Bennett, the General Manager of the Office of the Board of Studies, said the log-in numbers were growing daily as more and more students received their PIN letters via their schools.
"As at 26 June more than 6,500 HSC students had logged in to Students Online, and more than 16,000 visitors overall had viewed 185,000 pages," Dr Bennett said.
"Students Online has gone straight to the top 40 of all NSW government websites and is proving popular with the general public and students alike.
"This website is an Australian first and creates a personalised service for every NSW HSC student. The home page is built with 'pods' of information that students can move around, add or remove to suit themselves."
After logging in, each student sees official Board of Studies support material for their own subjects, such as:
- quick links to the syllabuses and past exam papers that apply to their courses
- their own HSC exam timetable
- an interactive 'ToDo' pod where they can list upcoming assignments and set their study priorities to High, Medium or Low
- an Essential Links pod, allowing students to add any of their favourite websites to the important pre-loaded study sites
- answers to many Frequently Asked Questions about the HSC, with many more to be added as the exams draw closer
- access to individual Assessment Rank Order Notices when they are available in November.
Dr Bennett said this year's HSC students had never known a world without the internet and research showed they preferred to obtain their information via the web.
"Bringing all the Board of Studies HSC resources together in a one-stop online study shop means we are able to reach these students in a manner that suits them," he said.
"By providing customised features and allowing students to further personalise the website, we are making sure it is relevant and useful for each and every HSC student.
"Students Online was in development for six months before its launch on 4 June 2008.
"It will supplement other support services for students, such as the HSC Advice Line, a telephone service which is operated in the period leading up to and including the exams."
Dr Bennett said there were still more vouchers to give away.
University Co-op Bookshop $50 vouchers will be given to students chosen randomly from each batch of 5000 students who log in for the first time until 30 November 2008.
