Official Notice - Minor amendments to Science Years 7-10 Syllabus

BOS 27/09

The following minor amendments to the Science Years 7-10 Syllabus clarify the scope of additional content and the intent of the essential content related to outcomes 4.1, 5.1, 4.4, 5.4, 4.13, 5.13, 4.15 and 5.15.

The amended Science Years 7-10 Syllabus is now available on the Board of Studies website.

Effective: Commencement of 2010.

The additional content ... an exhaustive list.

The distinction between ... in the Stage 6 Science curriculum. Essential content from either the Preliminary or HSC courses in Science may not be selected as additional content.

The additional content ... an exhaustive list. The additional content selected must be based on scientific ideas that are evidence-based. All scientific ideas are theories and must be testable and measurable using the procedures of scientific inquiry.

Minor Amendment to the Glossary of Terms:

Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (syllabus reference page 76): An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person is someone who:
  • is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • identifies himself or herself as an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander, and
  • is accepted as such by the Indigenous community in which he or she lives.
Indigenous peoples (syllabus reference page 77): Indigenous refers collectively to the first peoples of the land in international communities.
