Schools reassured over data

A small number of schools this morning (6/12/10) may have viewed some incomplete working data relating to 2010 HSC results when looking for School Certificate results on the Board of Studies secure Schools Online portal

The portal is for internal school use only.  At no stage was this data publicly available on the internet nor should it have been shown to any student.  The data only applied to courses with component reports - a diagnostic tool for schools.  The data did not include assessment marks, final HSC results or HSC bands.

The data represented one stage of the scaling process and is already out of date as the results calculations continue daily this week.  The data was quickly removed once the Board was alerted and after 9.45am it was no longer possible to view the material.

As the Board can identify every log-in to Schools Online, staff today contacted principals of the schools shown to have opened this page.  All schools have been cooperative and acted with integrity to undertake to destroy any saved material.

The temporary release of incomplete data does not jeopardise the final HSC results delivery, scheduled for 6.00am Wednesday 15 December 2010.

The security of the HSC is extremely important.  The Board is aware of the cause of this incident and has taken steps to ensure it cannot be repeated.
