Official Notice - New Stage 6 Human Society and Its Environment Life Skills Syllabus

BOS 51/10

The Stage 6 Human Society and Its Environment Life Skills Syllabus (2010) is now available.

The Board reviewed the Stage 6 Citizenship and Society Life Skills Syllabus (1999, amended 2007) to provide:

  • additional curriculum options in the HSIE Learning Area
  • a continuum of learning from the Life Skills outcomes and content in the Years 7–10 syllabuses.

As part of the review, a new Stage 6 Human Society and Its Environment Life Skills Syllabus was developed to replace the Stage 6 Citizenship and Society Life Skills Syllabus. The new syllabus will be implemented in 2012 for students undertaking a Preliminary course or courses from the syllabus. Teachers will continue to use the existing syllabus for students studying the Preliminary Citizenship and Society Life Skills course in 2011 and HSC Stage 6 Citizenship and Society Life Skills course in 2011 and 2012.

The following table summarises the key changes resulting from the review of the syllabus.

Syllabus structure

The Stage 6 Human Society and Its Environment Life Skills Syllabus provides students with the opportunity to undertake one or more of eight Stage 6 Life Skills courses – a specific course in each of Aboriginal Studies, Business and Economics, Citizenship and Legal Studies, Geography, History, Society and Culture, Studies of Religion, and the option to develop a course that draws on a range of outcomes and content across the modules (Human Society and Its Environment Life Skills).

For students undertaking Human Society and Its Environment Life Skills and additional courses from the syllabus, the Human Society and Its Environment Life Skills course must not duplicate any of the outcomes and content being undertaken in the additional courses being studied.

Sections 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 Sections 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 of the syllabus reflect changes to the syllabus structure and the advice provided in the revised ACE Manual (2005).
Objectives The syllabus objectives are more closely aligned with the regular syllabuses. This is consistent with the approach undertaken in the Years 7–10 syllabuses, Stage 6 Creative Arts Life Skills Syllabus and the Stage 6 Technology Life Skills Syllabus.
Modules The number of modules has increased to seven. Each module in the new syllabus is closely aligned with one or more subject-specific courses (ie Aboriginal Studies, Business and Economics, Citizenship and Legal Studies, Geography, History, Society and Culture and Studies of Religion).
Outcomes

Existing outcomes have been combined or amended and regrouped in the new modules. This is to ensure continuity from the Years 7–10 syllabuses and connection points with the regular Stage 6 Human Society and Its Environment syllabuses, and to broaden the focus of some outcomes. The syllabus also includes outcomes that reflect the breadth of courses available to students.

Outcomes have been grouped under objectives to assist teachers with programming. This is consistent with the approach undertaken for Life Skills outcomes and content in the Years 7–10 syllabuses.
Content Some of the existing content has been amended/removed. The syllabus includes additional content and examples of learning experiences.
Employability Skills Employability Skills have replaced the Key Competencies and Post-School Opportunities sections of the previous syllabus.
Assessment Information is provided to clarify the difference between ‘achieved independently’ and ‘achieved with support’.
Glossary The glossary provides definitions of selected subject-specific terms.
