Official Notice - Stage 6 Technology Life Skills Syllabus
BOS 04/10
The Stage 6 Technology Life Skills Syllabus (2010) is now available on the Board's website.
A review of the Stage 6 Technological and Applied Studies Life Skills Syllabus (1999, amended 2007) has been undertaken by the Board to provide:
- additional curriculum options in the Technology Learning Area
- a continuum of learning from the Life Skills outcomes and content in the Years 7-10 syllabuses.
The amended syllabus, now titled Stage 6 Technology Life Skills Syllabus, will replace the Stage 6 Technological and Applied Studies Life Skills Syllabus (1999, amended 2007) and will be implemented in 2011 for students undertaking preliminary course(s) from the syllabus. Teachers will continue to use the 1999/2007 syllabus for students studying the HSC Stage 6 Technological and Applied Studies Life Skills course in 2011.
The following table summarises key changes resulting from the review of the syllabus.
| Syllabus structure | The reviewed Stage 6 Technology Life Skills Syllabus provides students with the opportunity to undertake one or more of seven Stage 6 Life Skills courses as part of their pattern of study. The syllabus contains a specific course in each of the following technologies: Agriculture Life Skills, Design and Technology Life Skills, Food Technology Life Skills, Industrial Technology Life Skills, Information Processes and Technology Life Skills and Textiles and Design Life Skills. It also contains the option to develop a course that draws on outcomes and content from any of the modules, across the technologies (Technology Life Skills). If a student undertakes the Technology Life Skills course and other course(s) from the syllabus, the Technology Life Skills course must not duplicate any of the outcomes and content being undertaken in the other course(s) being studied. |
|---|---|
| Sections 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 | Sections 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 of the reviewed syllabus have amendments that reflect changes to the syllabus structure and the advice provided in the revised ACE Manual (2005). |
| Objectives | The objectives have been amended, so that they are more closely aligned with the regular syllabuses. This is consistent with the approach undertaken in the Years 7-10 syllabuses. Objectives 1 and 2 in each course focus on a design process for the particular technology. |
| Modules | The number of modules has remained at six. Each module in the reviewed syllabus corresponds with one of the technologies (ie Agriculture, Design and Technology, Food Technology, Industrial Technology, Information Processes and Technology and Textiles and Design). |
| Outcomes | The outcomes have been combined or amended and regrouped under the new modules. This was necessary to ensure continuity from the new Years 7-10 syllabuses and connection points with the regular Stage 6 Technology syllabuses, and to broaden the focus of some outcomes. Some of the outcomes from the 1999/2007 syllabus are now included as content. Outcomes have been grouped under objectives to assist teachers with programming. This is consistent with the approach undertaken for Life Skills outcomes and content in the Years 7-10 syllabuses. |
| Content | Some of the content has been amended or removed. The reviewed syllabus also has some new content and examples of learning experiences. |
| Employability Skills | Employability Skills have replaced the Key Competencies and Post-School Opportunities sections. |
| Assessment | Information has been added to clarify the difference between 'achieved independently' and 'achieved with support'. |
| Glossary | The glossary has been amended. Generic terms related to design have been defined, in addition to specific terms for each of the technologies. |
The Profile of Student Achievement for the reviewed syllabus will be available on the web from the beginning of 2011.
Effective: Commencement of 2011 Preliminary course.
