English Stage 6 Prescriptions 2015-2020: Advice to teachers

The 2015–2020 English Prescriptions document will be available on the Board’s website from the beginning of Term 3, 2013. The revised document includes changes to electives, the addition of new texts and the relocation of some current texts. The revised Prescriptions also recognises the need for stability in HSC English teaching and learning programs as the majority of texts will be familiar from previous Prescriptions lists. Annotations will be available for texts prescribed for the first time while the annotations for texts that remain but have moved will be updated to reflect their new elective focus.

HSC English (Standard), (Advanced), (ESL)

The new Area of Study for Standard, Advanced and ESL is Discovery. New elective descriptions amplify the syllabus module descriptions and are intended to stimulate student interest and encourage engaging teaching and learning programs.

Module titles remain the same in all three courses. Module A (Standard) offers two electives, Distinctive Voices and Distinctively Visual. In Module C (Standard) there are two electives, Exploring Interactions and Exploring Transitions. Module A (Advanced) similarly offers two electives, Intertextual Connections and Intertextual Perspectives. In Module C (Advanced) there are two electives, Representing People and Politics and Representing People and Landscapes. In English (ESL) the electives remain unchanged.

HSC English (Extension 1)

The titles of the modules remain unchanged. Within Module A there are three electives: Life Writing, Comedy and Science Fiction. The elective Comedy replaces Crime Writing from the current Prescriptions. Electives in Modules B and C remain unchanged. All electives in English Extension 1 have five text choices.

This early advice is an indication of the extent of change, however, teachers should wait for the publication of the 2015–2020 Prescriptions in early Term 3 to commence planning for the 2014 Preliminary and 2015 HSC years. At this time the list of prescribed texts and their publication details together with the accompanying annotations will be available on the Board’s website.

The following table provides a comparison of electives between the 2009–2014 Prescriptions and the 2015–2020 Prescriptions.
