Programing using the new English K-10 Syllabus

In 2014 all NSW primary schools will commence implementation of the new BOSTES K-10 English syllabus. The Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards has developed materials to assist in planning programs for the new NSW English K – 10 syllabus. The materials assist in

  • developing a clear scope and sequence of the intended learning experiences and outcomes
  • incorporating a wide variety of quality literature available for the students to access
  • sequencing learning of key skills such as reading and comprehension.

Key Skills posters are available which may be useful when you are developing your whole school approach to teaching English (there are also posters for Mathematics Skills). These can be purchased from BOSTES' online shop.

These large (A1) syllabus posters provide teachers with an overview of the sequence of learning and skill development. From Early Stage 1 through to Stage 3, in English Teachers can use these at-a-glance wall posters in their classroom to:

  • identify the appropriate stage to introduce key concepts and skills
  • identify the key concepts and skills that precede or follow those introduced in a particular stage
  • program teaching and learning experiences to build on and extend key concepts and skills developed at an earlier stage of learning
  • place individual students on the continuum of learning, based on the knowledge, skills and understanding of the key concepts they demonstrate.

Further advice on programming can be found at http://syllabus.bos.nsw.edu.au/support-materials/programming/. This includes sections on

  • Planning
  • Designing
  • Differentiated programming
  • Sharing learning and assessment intentions
  • Integrating information and communications technology
  • Advice on scope and sequences including samples
  • Advice on sample units including samples.

BOSTES' online Program Builder tool can also assist in the programming process.
