Online Water Safety Resource to support K-6 PDHPE syllabus

Many primary schools begin the new school year with a focus on the Safe Living Strand in the NSW K-6 PDHPE syllabus. Safe Living content includes emergency procedures and safety in personal, home, rural, school, play, road and water contexts.

In Water Safety students learn about:

  • water environment
  • safe places to swim
  • safety equipment
  • safety skills

Primary school children are encouraged to learn about beach safety through the new Surf Hero website. World ranked professional surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, is an ambassador for the site.

Surf Hero has a comprehensive activity centre of fun ways to learn about safety and warning signs, how to identify a rip, the role of Lifeguards and Lifesavers and what our responsibilities are as beach users.

In addition to children using the site in their own time, the games and activities have been designed so that teachers can use them to complete the water safety components of primary school syllabuses.
