Quality Teaching Council meets for the first time

The first meeting of the Quality Teaching Council (QTC) was held on 19 March 2014.

The Council represents the views of NSW teachers and the community, and is directly involved with policy improvements to accreditation, professional development and initial teacher education programs.

Current members include the President of the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES), 10 members elected by and representing teachers, and 10 members appointed by the Minister for Education.

Elections for the 10 teacher representatives on the Council are held every three years. The next election will be in 2015. Accredited NSW teachers and principals are able to stand for election, and all NSW teachers are eligible to vote.

Items discussed in the March meeting were the revised Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher Policy, endorsement criteria for school-based professional development and priority areas in Initial Teacher Education.

The Council will be instrumental in implementing the Minister’s reforms outlined in the Great Teaching, Inspired Learning initiative.

Council members are able to raise teacher feedback about the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and the teacher accreditation process at meetings.
