HSC marking workshops

BOSTES is running a series of workshops for secondary teachers on the HSC marking process.

In announcing the workshops, the Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli noted that HSC markers say that marking is the best professional development they could ever have.

The BOSTES HSC Marking Professional Development one-day workshops will provide an opportunity for these teachers to gain the skills that HSC marking provides.

At the workshop, teachers will engage in a hands-on simulation of the HSC onscreen marking process and learn valuable skills that can be taken back to their schools. Teachers who attend will be able to help their students better understand the expectations of the HSC examination, and approach the development and marking of assessment tasks effectively.

By using real student responses from the 2013 HSC English Standard and Advanced examination, teachers will read and analyse a range of student answers and learn how to apply marking guidelines to make valid judgements to produce reliable and consistent results.

Because not all teachers can make it to a BOSTES marking centre - they may live in a regional and remote location where it is not possible to attend a marking centre, do not teach Year 12 or have other commitments - workshops are being held on Saturdays.

The first workshop was held on Saturday 3 May in Sydney. As an initiative to assist rural and regional teachers, other workshop locations include:

  • Griffith, Saturday 10 May
  • Dubbo, Saturday 17 May
  • Ballina, Saturday 24 May
  • Canberra, Saturday 31 May

The workshops are open to all secondary teachers, particularly those teaching Year 12.
