Since the introduction of NAPLAN in 2008, NSW schools have been provided with pencils in the NAPLAN test materials package. This was to ensure that the scanning technology could capture student responses accurately. However, as scanning technology has progressed significantly, 2B or HB pencils are no longer required.

From 2016, pencils will no longer be supplied to NSW schools for students to use when completing the NAPLAN tests. Students should use their own pen or lead pencil. Schools will need to have arrangements in place for students who do not provide their own.
