A registered non-government school is required to keep a register, in a form approved by the Minister for Education, of the enrolments and daily attendances of all students at the school.

In 2014, the Minister approved changed codes for enrolment registers. The changes apply from 2015.

The changes align NSW codes with ACARA's National Standards for Student Attendance Data Reporting, which were developed to establish nationally consistent parameters for the collection and reporting of attendance data.

The changes include holidays taken by students outside of school vacation periods now being recorded as absences.
