Aboriginal Education Unit project wins Premier's Public Sector Award

Board Bulletin (Vol 17 No 1)

The Aboriginal Education Unit at the Office of the Board of Studies has won a Silver Award in the Premier’s Public Sector Awards.

Nominated in the ‘Fairness and Opportunity’ category for Building the educational capacity of Aboriginal communities, the Unit received the award from Premier Iemma at a function in November 2007.

Speaking after the presentation, Dr John Bennett, General Manager of the Office of the Board of Studies, said, ‘The award acknowledges the combined efforts of Board of Studies staff and many collaborators, including Aboriginal language centres and community groups, schools, teachers, universities and representatives of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and other government agencies.’

‘This is a great achievement on the part of everyone who played a role in bringing this project to fruition,’ Dr Bennett said.

Case study Gilgandra - Mathematics

The Mathematics in Indigenous Contexts Years 6–8 project was introduced in 2003 to help students make the transition from Year 6 to Year 7 in Mathematics. Experienced teachers and university mentors supported the schools, teachers and Aboriginal Education Assistants (AEA) to engage with Aboriginal community members in the development of context-based curriculum.

Teaching and learning Aboriginal languages in NSW

Ten schools from Parkes, Forbes and the Central West of NSW attended the region's first workshop for the teaching of the local Aboriginal language, Wiradjuri.

Championing Aboriginal Studies

Students who championed the HSC Aboriginal Studies course in their schools have been rewarded with excellent results and awards from the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG).

Every year at the AECG Annual Dinner awards are presented to the highest-achieving Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students in the HSC Aboriginal Studies course.

NSW Aboriginal Languages K-10 Syllabus in action

The Board of Studies NSW released the Aboriginal Languages K-10 Syllabus in 2003. Through Aboriginal Language programs students learn to listen, speak, read and write in an Aboriginal language, compare features of the structure of Aboriginal languages and investigate the relationship between language and culture. Approximately 50 schools in NSW currently have Aboriginal Language programs.

In Term 1 the Board of Studies launched a new Aboriginal education website designed to help teachers more easily find curriculum support materials that are specific to Aboriginal Education.

'Mathematics in Indigenous Contexts' resources for K-2 being developed

The Board of Studies has been working intensively with a number of schools to develop a range of resources that will guide schools to more effectively implement the K-6 and Years 7-10 Mathematics syllabuses.
