Official Notice - Call for Expressions of Interest for Members of Examination Committees and Assessors

BOS 25/09

Expressions of interest are invited from suitably qualified teachers and academics who wish to participate in the development of the 2010 Higher School Certificate examinations and School Certificate tests as a member of an examination committee or assessor. The development of the examinations will commence in Term 4 2009 and will continue to about July 2010. Assessing takes one day and occurs usually in Term 1.

Successful applicants receive an honorarium and travel expenses.

Applications for committee member must be submitted no later than Friday 4 September 2009 and for assessor no later than Friday 30 October.

Curriculum Writers for Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Indonesian and Korean Syllabus Development

To assist with the development of syllabuses in Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Indonesian and Korean for Heritage Language speakers at the senior secondary level, the Office of the Board of Studies is creating a register of curriculum writers for tasks at various stages of the syllabus development process. Depending on their current employment, selected writers will be contracted or deployed (subject to employer's approval) to undertake the writing tasks.

Expressions of interest for inclusion on the register are particularly sought from people with advanced proficiency, skills, experience and/or expertise in the writing of either Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Indonesian or Korean curriculum materials.

Board Bulletin Digest No. 2 available now

Times change, the way we communicate changes, and the Board Bulletin is changing too.

In schools this week is the first Board Bulletin Digest - a print index of all the articles, Official Notices and resources that have appeared online in Term 1.

On the front page is a reminder of just how important it now is to subscribe to the Board's email news alert service.

Email subscription to Board news is fast, it's easy and it won't overload your inbox. Thousands of teachers, students, parents and others are already subscribed to ensure they don't miss out on important news and resources.

Unlike some email subscriptions, the Board's news alert service is quick and simple. You won't be asked for your home address, or your date of birth - just to enter your email address (here on the right of this article) and then to check for a confirmation message in your inbox and click on the verifying link.

Currently, as an extra incentive to sign up, the Board has a number of double passes to the Sydney Morning Herald HSC and Careers Expo to give away to new email subscribers. If you are already a subscriber why not pass this link on to a student, teacher or parent who might like free tickets to the Expo, as well as Board news from the source?

VET Curriculum Writers - Call for Expressions of Interest

To assist with the management of syllabus development for Vocational Education and Training in 2009, the Office of the Board of Studies is updating its register of curriculum writers. This register will be used to select writers to undertake tasks at various stages of the year.

Projects for 2009 require writers with particular expertise in the following areas:

Construction
Primary Industries

People with expertise in writing syllabuses, support materials, samples or units of work and/or in the conduct of educational research are invited to submit an expression of interest in being on the register.

The expression of interest form should be completed and submitted, along with the required supporting statements and documentation to:

Syllabus amendments, text lists, exam and assessment changes, new services and support materials - all are published first online here on the Board's website.

The best way to be sure you miss nothing is to subscribe to the Board's email news alerts - see the box to the right of this article.

Email alerts are simple, they're free, and they won't overload your inbox.

It works like this: overnight the alert service checks for new articles published on the Board's website and compiles a single, simple email with direct links to any new items.

Very early the next morning, usually around 4.00am, the email is sent to all subscribers. The message will be waiting for you when you are ready to read it. It takes very little time to open the email, check the links and see if anything is of interest to you or your colleagues.

You will never get more than one email alert from the Board per day, and it will often be less than that.

You can cut down your emails even more by only subscribing to Official Notice alerts (see the box at right). Official Notices are about important Board rules, procedures and syllabus changes. The last Board Bulletin for 2008 reminded schools that from 2009 Official Notices are only published online.

It is very important to have at least one email subscriber in each NSW school who can check for Official Notices and other important information from the Board.

International schools offering the NSW curriculum should also ensure at least one person is subscribed to the email alert service.

The Board of Studies website is one of the largest and busiest education sites in the world. For anyone in the education community - teachers, principals, parents, students and others - this site contains essential reading.

Expressions of Interest - Authorised Person for the purpose of Home Schooling

The Office is seeking expressions of interest for engagement as an Authorised Person to service the southern suburbs of Sydney.

Authorised Persons provide advice and report on applications for home schooling by way of written reports. This follows meetings with applicants and their children or review of submitted documentation by applicants to ensure compliance with the Act and related Guidelines.

The successful applicant for this role will be engaged for a period of up to three years, commencing 1 January 2009 with possibility of three years extension. Remuneration will be on a contracted fee-for-service basis.

The closing date for applications is Friday 17 October 2008.

Chief Examiners, Members of Examination Committees and Assessors for 2009 HSC and SC

The NSW Board of Studies invites expressions of interest from suitably qualified teachers and academics who wish to participate in the development of the 2009 Higher School Certificate examinations and School Certificate tests as Chief Examiner, member of an examination committee or assessor. The development of the examinations commences in Term 4 2008 and continues to about July 2009. Assessing takes one day and occurs usually in Term 1.

Applications for Chief Examiner must be submitted no later than Friday, 4 July and for committee member and assessor no later than Friday, 22 August 2008.

Aboriginal Perspectives

The Board is seeking teachers to be involved in developing a range of curriculum resources to assist in delivering the Aboriginal and Indigenous cross-curriculum content embedded in all the new Years 7-10 syllabuses.

The project will be carried out over an extended period of time and will include Aboriginal Curriculum Unit staff working with Aboriginal community groups, school systems and teachers.

Teachers with experience in programming and an interest in teaching relevant, authentic Aboriginal perspectives that provide significance within the curriculum for Aboriginal people, are invited to submit an Expression of Interest to be added to the register.

The Office is seeking expressions of interest from persons located in metropolitan and country NSW for engagement as Authorised Persons.

Successful applicants for these roles will be engaged for a period of up to three years, commencing 1 January 2008, with possibility of three years extension. Remuneration will be on a contracted fee-for-service basis.

HSC Distinction Courses 2008

Distinction courses will be offered for study in 2008. Distinction courses are challenging university level HSC courses especially designed for high-ability HSC accelerants. These courses consist of 2 units of study that are additional to the 10 units required for the HSC study pattern. As eligible students will have already completed some units of HSC courses, the inclusion of a 2 Unit Distinction Course in a student's HSC study program is more feasible in terms of time commitment and workload. As a general rule a student may only undertake one Distinction Course.
