Acting NSW Minister for Education and Training John Hatzistergos said today the first Higher School Certificate (HSC) examination of the year will begin today (11 August) with practical exams in Dance getting under way.

Attending a HSC Dance preview at Georges River College in Oatley, Mr Hatzistergos said 696 Dance students – 659 female and 37 male – were preparing for their first external exam, which includes a solo performance and a dance they have choreographed themselves.

‘During the next two weeks, markers will examine the solo performances and choreography of almost 700 Dance students. After each performance students will answer questions about their works’, Mr Hatzistergos said.

‘Dance students will also be examined on a major study in performance, composition or appreciation and will sit at least one written exam in October.

‘There is a strong interest in the HSC Dance course in regional areas of the state with 240 of the 696 students (more than one third) residing in regional NSW.

‘I wish all the state’s promising young dancers the very best of luck as they embark on their first external exams for 2008.

‘In the coming weeks, the HSC examinations will also begin for Drama, Music and Language students as they undertake the practical component of their exams’, Mr Hatzistergos said.

‘While Projects and major works will also fall due for students of Society and Culture, Textiles and Design, Industrial Technology, Drama, English Extension 2, Design and Technology, Visual Arts, Music and Agriculture.

Mr Hatzistergos said all the state’s estimated 67 000 HSC students will sit for their written HSC exams in October.

‘To help them prepare for their exams, the Iemma Government has launched a one-stop online study shop for Higher School Certificate students – the first of its kind in Australia’, he said.

‘The Students Online web offers a personalised experience for every Year 12 student.

‘The Board of Studies NSW website features HSC syllabuses, past exam papers, practice tests and other support materials, from the one easy location which allows students to customise the site to suit their needs.’

The new web site includes:

  • quick access to details of all the courses students are studying, past exam papers in those courses and their own personalised exam timetable
  • access to a variety of pods, such as News, Past Papers and Practice Tests, with the ability to keep the pods they want and hide the ones they don’t to create their own homepage
  • links to all relevant HSC materials, including key dates and news, syllabuses, notes from markers of previous exams and other related materials.

‘With just over two months until the HSC written exams begin, it is important students continue to remain focused and continue to put in a consistent effort to their studies’, Mr Hatzistergos said.

The written HSC exams begin on 16 October with Business Studies and some Languages and finish on 13 November. All students will sit for Paper 1 of the English exam on 17 October.
