A 2008 Higher School Certificate student from Bishop Druitt College (Coffs Harbour) has been named the winner of a regional award for his design of a multimedia wheelchair tray which can be used to play movies and music.

James Hargrave, an HSC Design and Technology student, is one of four Northern NSW students chosen to exhibit their major works in the regional exhibition of the HSC showcase, DesignTECH, at the Grafton Regional Gallery from 25 March to 19 April 2009.

James was today named the recipient of the UNSW Faculty of the Built Environment DesignTECH Regional Tour Award.

Acting General Manager of the Office of the Board of Studies, David Murphy, congratulated James on being the first recipient of the Regional Tour Award for his project, Multimedia Wheelchair Tray.

"As part of his HSC Design and Technology course, James has created an innovative unit for a wheelchair which allows a person with a disability to access movies, music and other digital entertainment," Mr Murphy said.

"It is an outstanding project, and we wish James well in his future studies and career."

The UNSW Faculty of the Built Environment sponsors the Regional Tour Award in recognition of talented young designers from regional Australia who 'play a future role in designing for a sustainable future'.

Mr Murphy said some of the State's best young designers were on show at the Grafton DesignTECH exhibition.

"Outstanding works by four Northern NSW students, including James, have been added to the local version of the DesignTECH exhibition", he said.

"They include a two-wheeled cart for the less mobile gardener, a range of natural skincare products and an eye-catching set of luggage.

"These works join designs which featured in the DesignTECH exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, and are now part of a regional tour."

The Board of Studies NSW runs DesignTECH in association with the Department of Education and Training to highlight the talent and skills demonstrated by HSC Design and Technology students.

Mr Murphy encouraged students and residents of Grafton and the North Coast to visit the exhibition.

"DesignTECH gives the community the chance to see the innovative work and technological applications emerging from the Design and Technology curriculum in NSW," he said.

"The projects, which meet a need in the community and enhance the environment, are immensely creative, innovative and practical."

The DesignTECH exhibition will be open at the Grafton Regional Gallery, 158 Fitzroy Street, Grafton until 19 April 2009.
