Resources for Years 7-10 for the new English K-10 syllabus

In 2014 all NSW secondary schools commenced teaching the new NSW English K-10 Syllabus to Years 7 and 9. The phased implementation means Years 8 and 10 will start the new English syllabus in 2015.

To assist secondary teachers the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) has developed materials for:

  • Planning programming
  • Designing programming
  • Differentiated programming
  • Sharing learning and assessment intentions
  • Integrating information and communications technology
  • Advice on scope and sequences including samples
  • Advice on sample units including samples

The resources include:

  • The BOSTES online Program Builder tool to assist in the programming process.
  • BOSTES’ e-syllabus website has a range of support materials. The Advice on Assessment section provides a useful overview of assessment in the classroom. It outlines key principles of effective assessment and provides detail about the three main approaches to assessment: assessment for learning, assessment as learning, and assessment of learning.
  • Teachers are reminded that BOSTES’ Suggested Texts for the English K-10 Syllabus is a compilation of quality reading and viewing that teachers can use to implement the new syllabus. It combines the classics and successful teaching texts with innovative recent works. This annotated list includes suggestions for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, film, media, multimedia and digital texts.
