Resources to support cultural diversity in Multicultural March
The NSW Government's Multicultural March is a month-long celebration of cultural diversity linked to Harmony Day. These multicultural and multilingual celebrations provide an opportunity for schools to focus on deepening students’ understanding of the values of cultural diversity.
The Making Multicultural Australia for the 21st Century website, jointly developed by the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards, the NSW Department of Education and Communities, and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), is one of Australia’s leading sources of quality multicultural educational resources and materials.
The website supports NSW syllabuses and was established to help teachers find quality resources on multiculturalism and explore new strategies to promote cultural diversity and tolerance.
Major sections of the website include:
- Multicultural Research Library – Over 3000 searchable pages of articles, videos, audios, images, multicultural artworks, legislation, academic writing;
- Multicultural History of Australia – Over 45 individual Timeline Screens of key issues in the development of Australia’s multicultural society;
- Hotwords - Definitions of commonly used and misused words and phrases;
- Lesson ideas for teachers – Lesson ideas by subject area or learning stage;
- Student activities and quizzes: Quizzes about cultural diversity throughout Australian history;
- e-Learning Objects: Downloadable multimedia files that can be used or modified for use in the classroom;
- Links to other multicultural educational resources on the web.
Teachers are encouraged to explore the exceptional range of resources available on the Making Multicultural Australia for the 21st Century website and to consider the suitability of these resources in helping to communicate the importance and value of cultural diversity to students.
