New classroom resource for primary teachers

The Dictionary of Classroom Strategies, a new resource for primary teachers, is now available through the Board’s Shop Online. The dictionary introduces teaching, learning and assessment strategies for the classroom. It can be used as a reference tool for teachers and as a professional development guide for schools.

The Board’s Inspector, Primary, Christine Taylor, said the idea for the dictionary came about at a forum for new teachers.

“Teachers like to have a wide variety of strategies to meet the diverse range of needs of children in their classroom,” Ms Taylor said.

“Some teachers were unfamiliar with a few of the strategies being discussed, so we decided to compile the dictionary."

And while initially developed with beginning teachers in mind, Ms Taylor said she soon realised it would have other audiences as well.

“Individually, teachers can use the dictionary to familiarise themselves with a variety of strategies to stimulate their lessons," she said.

"They could also use it as part of their professional development programs as well. For example, teachers could select an activity to trial, implement and then come together again to share what they have learnt."
