High quality early childhood learning assured with 7000 teachers accredited

Minister for Early Childhood Education Leslie Williams has announced the accreditation of almost 7,000 NSW early childhood teachers, giving them the same professional recognition as schoolteachers.

Mrs Williams said the accreditation by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) recognises the professionalism of NSW early childhood teachers and the vital role they play in developing young minds, when they are most receptive to learning.

“Skilled early childhood educators are critical to developing inquiry, creativity and investigation through play-based learning. I congratulate the newly accredited early childhood teachers for their professional leadership within the sector,” Mrs Williams said.

“When we invest in early childhood education, we invest in the future. Teacher accreditation is a significant contributor to quality and I thank these teachers for their personal commitment to quality.”

Early childhood teacher and director of the Holy Family Preschool at Emerton, Natalie Bugelli, said she is proud to see her staff accredited alongside NSW school teachers.

“I was impressed that BOSTES worked with early childhood teachers and directors to ensure the information provided was relevant. This meant becoming accredited was a positive and smooth experience,” Ms Bugelli said.

From October this year early childhood teachers starting in the profession need to apply for provisional or conditional accreditation before they can be employed.

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers guides and support the development of teachers throughout their careers.
